Inspired by ongoing conversations around the presentation of Civil Rights–era photography (particularly the pattern of displaying these images in black and white) I created this collage in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day using selectively colorized photographs. The stained glass imagery comes from the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Dr. King preached, worshipped, and where his funeral was held. I sampled the light and glow from the stained glass and used it to build custom gradients in Photoshop, allowing that radiance to extend across the surrounding images as a unifying element.
